CPT (Cone Penetration Test) in Birkenhead – Reliable Ground Investigation

Together, we solve the challenges of tomorrow.

Birkenhead sits on a complex sequence of glacial till overlain by alluvial deposits from the Mersey estuary. These soils vary in density and stiffness within short distances. The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) provides continuous profiles of cone resistance and sleeve friction. We push a 35.7 mm diameter cone at 20 mm/s per ISO 22476-1. The electric piezocone records pore pressure in real time. This data identifies stratigraphy and soil type without drilling. In Birkenhead, we combine CPT with [excavaciones-profundas](https://sao-paulo.sondajespt.com/excavaciones-profundas) for deep basement designs. The method avoids sample disturbance common in granular soils.

Process overview

We recently ran a CPT campaign on a brownfield site near Birkenhead Docks. The upper 4 m showed loose silty sand with cone resistance below 5 MPa. Below that, dense glacial till reached 25 MPa at 10 m depth. The CPT rig uses a 20-tonne push capacity and hydraulic anchors. Data logs every 20 mm give high-resolution profiles. We classify soil via Robertson charts (1990) using friction ratio and pore pressure. These parameters feed directly into bearing capacity and settlement calculations per Eurocode 7. We correlate CPT with [sondaje-spt](https://sao-paulo.sondajespt.com/sondaje-spt) when design requires N-values for liquefaction screening.

Local context

Birkenhead expanded rapidly during the 19th century dock boom. Many reclaimed areas rest on soft alluvial clays and made ground. These deposits settle unevenly under load. A single CPT sounding missed a buried channel filled with compressible silt. The foundation design assumed uniform till. Differential settlement exceeded 25 mm. Continuous CPT profiling across the site would have caught the anomaly. We always run multiple CPT soundings aligned to the expected geology. Dissipation tests in clay layers confirm consolidation parameters before raft or pile design.

Additional services

01

Standard Electric CPT

Piezocone with 15 cm² tip area. Continuous logging of qc, fs, u2. Used for stratigraphy and soil classification in glacial till and alluvium.

02

CPT with Seismic Module

Adds vs30/" data-interlink="1">shear wave velocity measurement via downhole geophones. Provides Vs30 for site class per Eurocode 8. Essential for dynamic design in Birkenhead.

03

CPT with Dissipation Tests

Pause penetration at selected depths. Record pore pressure decay to estimate coefficient of consolidation (cv). Used for soft clay settlement analysis.

Common questions

How deep can CPT reach in Birkenhead soils?

In dense glacial till we typically reach 15-20 m. Soft alluvium allows up to 30 m. Refusal occurs when cone resistance exceeds 35 MPa or when driving hits cobbles within the till layer.

What is the cost range for a CPT in Birkenhead?

A standard CPT sounding in Birkenhead costs between £120 and £190 per metre, depending on depth and access conditions. Bulk discounts apply for multiple soundings on the same site.

How does CPT compare to SPT for liquefaction assessment?

CPT gives continuous profiles while SPT provides discrete N-values at 1 m intervals. For liquefaction screening in Birkenhead alluvial sands, CPT with pore pressure data is preferred. We correlate both when required.
